At Small Folk, learning unfolds naturally. Here is what guides us — from the relationships we build to the experiences we offer and the decisions we make each day.
Childhood & wonder
We believe childhood is a unique and valuable time to be experienced with wonder, curiosity and joy. We see every child as capable, competent and full of potential, bringing their own strengths, ideas, culture and ways of learning.
Belonging
We strive to provide a calm, nurturing environment that feels welcoming and familiar — one where children develop confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of learning through play, exploration and connection.
Relationships
Relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We take the time to know each child as an individual, and we value genuine partnerships with families built on open communication, trust and mutual respect.
Learning through play
Play is the natural context for learning. Through play, children investigate, create, problem-solve, collaborate and develop a deep understanding of the world, with educators thoughtfully extending their thinking.
The whole child
Learning is not confined to academic outcomes. We intentionally nurture independence, confidence, empathy, communication, critical thinking and resilience — the strongest foundation for lifelong learning.
Nature as teacher
Nature is an important teacher. Regular time in the natural world builds wonder, responsibility and respect, and invites exploration, risk-taking, sustainability and a growing care for the environment.
Diversity & inclusion
We value diversity and believe every child and family has the right to feel respected, included and represented. We acknowledge the Yaegl People as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and play, and embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives authentically throughout our program.
Children's rights
Children's rights, voices and wellbeing are central to our practice. We uphold the National Child Safe Standards — listening to children, respecting their perspectives, and maintaining environments where every child is protected, valued and able to thrive.
Reflective practice
We are lifelong learners committed to reflective practice and continuous improvement. Our philosophy is a living document that grows with our children, families, educators and community.
